EXPIRED: 12/17/11 - Eva Ekvall, 28, born in Venezuela, was the daughter of relocated Alaskans of American and Jamaican descent.
She was Miss Venezuela in 2000 and placed 3rd in 2001′s Miss Universe competition. Recently she was a TV news anchor who regularly reported on her personal crusade against breast cancer, which she was diagnosed with in 2010.
While enduring eight months of treatment that included chemotherapy, radiation and a mastectomy, she chronicled this experience in a book of photographs, Fuera de Foco (Out of Focus), released in 2011.
But alas, Ekvall lost her fight.
