EXPIRED: 08/30/09 – Frank Milford, 101, husband of Anita for 81 yrs, making him the most successful husband in the UK. The two met at a YMCA dance in ‘26 and credit their strong marriage to both daily disagreements & a little romance.
The couple met in 1926 at a YMCA dance and married in May 1928, after which they went and saw a Charlie Chaplin movie.. They went on to have two children, Marie and Frank and were grandparents, great-grandparents and great-great-grandparents several times over.
The Milford’s lived in a 3-bedroom bungalow in Plymouth for more than 70 years. During World War II it was hit by a bomb. But they recovered.
They moved into a nursing home in 2005, together. The couple said that one of the secrets for a long and happy marriage was to “share a little kiss” every night before bed.
Mrs Milford said: “Our advice to young couples would be to make time for a little romance every day. I never cared much for big romantic gestures. Frank has respected me from the moment we met. That is the secret of true love, I suppose.”
Their son, Frank, said: “They have always lived for each other, it’s as simple as that. My father had never driven a car — maybe that’s why he lived so long.”
And so it was.
Milford died months before the couple could claim to be England’s longest married couple ever. But it’s okay. He died with Anita by his side, holding his hand. sharing a kittle kiss.
