EXPIRED: 09/24/09 – Nelly Arcan, 35, was Quebec’s most famous prostitute. Her autobiographical novel, “Putain,” (English translation: “Whore”) catapulted her to one of Canada’s most important feminist writers. She offed herself after finishing her latest tome, “Paradis clef en main,” (English translation: “Paradise turn-key”) set for release in November.

The plot of the new book is set in a society where suicide is a right for everyone, not just for those who suffer from serious illnesses.

Canadian journalists described Arcan as an intelligent woman, fascinated by beauty, eternal youth and death. Many called her “fragile.”
