EXPIRED: 10/02/09 – Peg Mullen, 92, had a son who was killed by “friendly fire” in Vietnam.
Mrs. Mullen didn’t believe it was an accident and wouldn’t let the government off the hook. She used her son’s death benefit to buy 2 half-page newspaper ads, each with more than 700 crosses, one for each Iowan killed in the war.
She hounded the government to come clean about his death – refusing a military funeral & returning his medals to President Richard Nixon saying, “Send it to the next damn fool.”
Her story was captured in “Friendly Fire,” a book and TV movie starring Carol Burnett. She coutered with her own book called “Unfriendly Fire: A Mother’s Memoir.”
