EXPIRED: 10/06/09 – Donna Mae Mims, 82, aka the “Pink Lady,” was the 1st woman to win a Sports Car Club of America national championship.
Mims also raced in the 1st Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash, a race that came to be known as the Cannonball Run, back in 1972.
She wore tight-fitting shirts, pants and was suspected to go bra-less, a clever plan to get her out of any possible traffic tickets that could have come her way. Adrienne Barbeau played Mims in the 1981 movie, “The Cannonball Run.”
Mims last wish — to be seated behind the steering wheel of a 1979 pink Corvette at her wake — was granted. Over 40 Corvettes followed her hearse in her funeral procession. Nice way to go.
