EXPIRED: 10/07/09 – Shelby Singleton, 77, had an unknown singer record a song about small-town backbiting, & hours later drove the acetate to local radio stations & demanded they play it. “Harper Valley P.T.A.” hit #1 nearly overnight.
With profits from Harper Valley he bought master recordings of Sun Records, in addition to the name of the company, made famous by Sam Phillips, the visionay who discovered and recorded Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins and every other vital name in early rock and rockabilly.
Singleton was integral in bringing those voices to an entirely new audience in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. And it all wouldn’t have been possible if not for a little song about a PTA meeting that took just a few hours to record.
