EXPIRED: 10/09/09 – Raymond Brown, 94, was a theatrical lawyer who defended Soviet spies, boxer Rubin ‘Hurricane’ Carter, the Black Panthers, and Dr. X, a surgeon accused of murdering patients with overdoses of muscle relaxants.
Brown was the son of a railroad mechanic so he knew what hard work meant. He paid his way thru Florida A & M University by working as a longshoreman, and continued working while he received a law degree from Fordham University.
Noticing that there weren’t too many black lawyers in large firms, Brown became a solo practitioner focusing on crimes of prejudice and poverty. Being from Jersey City and living in Newark, he found many cases in his own backyard.
