EXPIRED: 10/23/09 – Chris Hawk, 58, had the surf in his blood. Just a month after being inducted into the Surfers’ Hall of Fame, the forever blond beach boy was honored with a makeshift memorial of surfboards, photographs and flowers in Huntington Beach, California.
He passed away, not far from the waves he loved to ride in his San Clemente home after battling oral cancer.
The local surfer and board shaper and was inducted last month into the Surfers’ Hall of Fame. The inductions usually happen in July during the U.S. Open of Surfing, but officials made an exception for Hawk because of his terminal diagnosis.
He struggled to give his acceptance speech, simply saying, “This is the most honorable moment of my life.”
Next to his footprints in the cement, he wrote the words, “Peace. Love. Surf.”
