EXPIRED: 11/15/09 – Antonio de Nigris, 31, a Mexican soccer player, was a star on the rise. He was an international star, actually and had a beautiful young family.
De Nigris played as a striker with the Mexican national team 16 times, including at the 2001 Copa America. Later he played with Spanish club Villarreal, then moved to Greece earlier this season from Turkish club Ankaragucu and made six appearances in the Greek Super League.
It was in Greece where he joined the club Larissa. Larissa club spokesman Christos Tsoumaris said De Nigris’ wife contacted the club after her husband felt unwell early Monday.
“The Larissa family mourns from today the tragic loss of 31-year-old international Mexican footballer, Antonio De Nigris,” a club statement said. “It is with deep sorrow that the administration, technical leadership, players and executives of the club would like to express their condolences to his family, particularly his spouse Sonia and five-year-old daughter Miranda.”
“An autopsy will be held at the General Academic Hospital in Larissa to determine the precise reasons of his death.”
