EXPIRED: 11/27/09 –
RIP – Mike Penner, 52, was a transsexual sportswriter. I think that’s a pretty brave thing to be.
See, first Penner was a well-respected male sportswriter. He spent 23 years with the LA Times.
And then, 2 years ago, he went on vacation and came back to his readers as someone very different, making international headlines in 2007 when he announced he was transsexual and began working under the byline “Christine Daniels.”
Here’s how his last column read before his vacation:
“During my 23 years with The Times’ sports department, I have held a wide variety of roles and titles. Tennis writer. Angels beat reporter. Olympics writer….”
“Today I leave for a few weeks’ vacation, and when I return, I will come back in yet another incarnation. As Christine. I am a transsexual sportswriter.”
Penner/Daniels returned to the LA Times writing a blog called ”Woman in Transition.”
But all must not have been an easy transition for Christine as she started using the “Mike Penner” byline again in October 2008, dropping the “Woman in Transition” blog and penning a column for the Times called Totally Random that focused on offbeat and historic moments in sports.
His last column appeared on November 15th.
His cause of death is considered a suicide.
