EXPIRED: 12/14/09 – Chris Feinstein, 42, was bassist for Ryan Adams’ former backing band, The Cardinals until this past January.
He passed away at his Manhattan apartment, cause of death still unknown and the time of this posting.
“This is the saddest day of my life,” Cardinals drummer Brad Pemberton said in a statement posted on the Lost Highway Records website. “I lost my best friend today… things will never be quite the same.”
Feinstein joined The Cardinals in 2006 following the departure of original bassist Catherine Popper who had introduced Adams to her replacement.
Feinstein’s first disc with the band was 2007’s Easy Tiger, which was billed as an Adams solo disc but featured The Cardinals. He also played on 2007’s Follow The Lights EP and last year’s Cardinology. Adams left The Cardinals in January because he wanted to take a break from making music. He’d also been suffering from Meniere’s disease, an inner ear disorder that affects hearing and balance.
But Feinstein’s career still looked bright even without Adams. He’d been working with Moby, Fat Joe, Albert Hammond, Jr., Minnie Driver and had co-written and played guitar on 4 tracks on Santigold’s debut CD.
NYC’s indie music scene loses another and it really can’t afford to.
