EXPIRED: 12/29/09 – Morefu, 24, one of the oldest giraffes in the world was too old to respond to meds for arthritis. And when you’re 18 feet tall and weigh 2,140 lbs, arthritis can be a problem. He was euthanized under care of his keepers.

Giraffes typically reach about 10-15 years old in the wild, unless something eats them first. In captivity, they’ve been known to live about 25 years. So Morefu (whose name is the Swahili word for ‘long’) led a pretty long life, considering. He was he oldest male giraffe in North America.

Morefu came to the Birmingham Zoo in Alabama in 1985 and was living with 3 other giraffes – two females, Mara and Willow, and one male, Jalil. He had sired ten offspring, including daughter Willow.

Visitors knew him as a gentle giant, although he was kind of a pig at the feeding stations, knocking his lady friends giraffes out of the way so he could get the best, most succulent branches and leaves.

Men are pigs, even when they are giraffes.
