EXPIRED: 01/01/10 – Gregory Slay, 40, former drummer for Birmingham, Alabama alternative rock band, Remy Zero, went on to record as Sleepwell.

Formed in ’89, Remy Zero flailed about until they sent Radiohead their demo tapes in 1994. Based on those demos alone, they gained the interest of the public and music critics alike when Radiohead took them from obscurity and had them open for their 1995 US tour in support of the Bends. The group soon released a self-titled debut and were being touted as the “next big thing” while getting airplay on the hippest radio stations, and song placements in numerous movies and television shows, including the hit TV show, Smallville which used their song “Save Me” as the show’s theme.

The band broke up in 2003 and Slay went solo, recording under the name, Sleepwell. He can be heard on the theme for Nip/Tuck for which he was nominated for an Emmy.

Cause of death was a long battle with cystic fibrosis.
