EXPIRED: 01/10/10 – Donald Goerke, 83, made my brother really happy as a kid. Me not so much.
Goerke, invented SpaghettiOs, those little round pasta rings swimming in red sauce packed in a can that made for easy-to-fix lunches in the 1960’s.
My brother loved SpaghettiOs. I didn’t. My favorite was RavioliOs, which Goerke also created.
Although Goerke introduced more than 100 products for his employer, Campbell Soup, during his 35-year career, he is best known for the well-known jingle: “The neat, round spaghetti you can eat with a spoon – Uh-oh, SpaghettiOs.”
In the early 1960s, Goerke was marketing research director for the Jersey City-based Franco-American division of Campbell. Hoping to boost family sales, his group played with different pasta shapes that would appeal to kids, including baseballs and stars. He decided to go with O’s. Kids went crazy for it. Moms loved it, too because it was “spoonable” and wouldn’t make a mess.
Stoners later found out it satisfied the munchies, too.
Goerke later transitioned his success into another “spoonable” food: Campbell’s Chunky Soup. Seems that husbands made a mess too.
