RIP – JAY REATARD

EXPIRED: 01/13/10 – Jay Reatard, 29, was a garage rocker from Memphis, Tennessee who was born as Jimmy Lee Lindsey Jr.

He’d been suffering from the flu, but no-one expected to find him dead. He was known for known for a gruff persona and for driving, snarling rock.

As of January 18th, memphis police are treating his death as a possible homicide….

Reatard was found in bed and although homicide investigators have opened up a file on his death, the Memphis police have said that such a move is typical of an unexpected death but doesn’t indicate foul play.

An official word has yet to be released.

The tall, shaggy-haired guitarist first emerged as a member of Memphis garage outfit The Reatards in the early 90s but went on to develop a major solo career during which he released several singles and two critically acclaimed albums, Blood Visions in 2006 and Watch Me Fall, out just this year.

Watch Me Fall was Reatard’s first full studio release on Matador Records and was accompanied by single, “It Ain’t Gonna Save Me,” a title that’s a little ironic and hard to listen to it now.
