EXPIRED: 01/18/09 – Kate McGarrigle, 63, was half of the folk music duo Kate and Anna McGarrigle, before she became better known as the mom of artists Martha Wainwright and Rufus Wainwright from her marriage to songwriter Loudon Wainwright.
Last night she became another victim of cancer.
McGarrigle, got her start in the Montreal folk music scene when she and her sister released their eponymous debut album in 1975. They went on to release 10 records under the duo’s name, and contributed songs and vocals to other artists like Emmylou Harris.
McGarrigle’s final full-length release, The McGarrigle Christmas Hour, came in 2005. Martha & Rufus contributed.
In 2008, she established the Kate McGarrigle Fund in association with McGill University Health Centre, the Jewish General Hospital through the MUHC Foundation, the Cedars Cancer Institute, and Cancer Research UK in order to raise money and awareness for the fight against sarcoma.
