EXPIRED: 01/20/10 – Jim Korthe, 39, was a pretty good drummer as a kid. At 16 he formed and toured with the band Phantasm. That didn’t work out so well so he joined Dimestore Hoods. They got a record contract, but Korthe also got into ganglife and drugs..
So he turned his back on ganglife and turned to music completely – this time as a lead singer and wrote about what he knew – being young and angry in Los Angeles. The music was rap-metal. The band was 3rd Strike.
By the end of 2001 they had recorded their debut, Lost Angel, which was released the following May and reached No. 72 on the Billboard charts. They supported the album at both the Ozzfest and Warped tours that summer. But 3rd Strike broke up in 2004.
And wouldn’t you know it? Just as they were about to come back – with new songs in the can and everything, Korthe died Wednesday of undetermined causes as he prepared to see a doctor treating him for a respiratory problem and fatigue.
