EXPIRED: 02/08/10 – Phil Harris, 53, was the captain of the fishing boat Cornelia Marie, and more recently, the unlikely star of the TV, “Deadliest Catch,” seen on The Discovery Channel.
Harris started working on fishing boats at age 7 and started work 10 years later on a crab boat. When Harris turned 21, he ran a fishing vessel out of Seattle, making him one of the youngest to captain a vessel in the Bering Sea.
“Deadliest Catch” is a reality show that depicts the crab fishing industry in the dangerous waters off Alaska. Harris became an immensely popular figure within the show due to his blunt personality, incredible work ethic, and unique sense of humor.
He suffered a massive stroke on January 29 while the boat was in port at St. Paul Island, Alaska and was flown to Anchorage for surgery. He died on Tuesday.
