EXPIRED: 02/12/10 – Nodar Kumaritashvili, 21, was an Olympian.

He represented Georgia, his home country, in the  2008-09 Luge World Cup, finishing 55th.  This qualified him for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

During a training run at the Whistler Sliding Centre, just hours before the opening ceremony, Kumaritashvili was injured during a training run in which he flew off the track and hit a support column at 90 mph (144 km).

Kumaritishvili is the fourth athlete to have died in the history of the Winter Olympics.
