EXPIRED: 03/10/10 – Maya, 10 months, was born at the Chattanooga Zoo just last May and was doing great, as far as cotton-top tamarins go.

But the extremely endangered monkey started to lose her balance a few days ago, and underwent bloodwork and X-rays to see what the issues were.

After taking her to the University of Tennessee at Knoxville’s Veterinarian School, personnel discovered that Maya developed cryptococcus neoformans, a fungus that lives in both plants and animals. The fungus often is difficult to diagnose until symptoms are too advanced to treat, officials said.

Maya never saw her first birthday, and unfortunately can not help the Chattanooga Zoo with efforts to get the cotton-top tamarin off the endangered list.

Rest in peace little Maya…
