EXPIRED: 03/13/10 – Carol Clerk, 55, saw more of rock and roll than most of us can only dream of. She was a news editor and writer at some of the UK’s most esteemed rock publications and hung out and drank a few pints with the people who made the music.

She was a force to be reckoned with at Melody Maker, but she also contributed to UNCUT, Classic Rock and many excellent books including The Saga Of Hawkwind, Pogue Mahone: Kiss My Arse: The Story of The Pogues, Madonna Style, Nirvana and The Damned: Light at the End of the Tunnel.

Not one to suffer fools, her writing was never about narcissistic self-publicity, but rather to provide a conduit for what she believed to be the truth. And if it meant being critical of a band or an album or a gig, then so be it – and damn the ramifications.

Carol was old school in the best possible sense, prepared to raise hell in defense of those who’s talents she felt deserved greater recognition, yet also never ready to accept such talents compromising their own principles for commercial expediency. All done with a great sense of humor.

Cancer took the last few months away from her in dribs and drabs. But there’s still the music.

So since you didn’t have to know her to share a passion of music with her, go put on something raucous – AC/DC maybe – and have a pint in her name. She’d enjoy that.

  1. Dear Nigel and Eve
I am saddened by the loss of your dear Carol.
I knew this tremendous woman because she shared an apartment with my daughter ” Bambi ” to Heastan Road. I remember: we know drunk, smoked and laughed a lot with her, memorable memories(souvenirs).
    Affectionate thoughts to you two.
    Peggy Kirsanoff
